About 15 years ago, I was turned on to this all-female, world music band that hails from Santa Cruz, CA. Many of my women (some call themselves womyn) friends raved about this band; their stage presence, energy, political and social justice awareness. I liked their music, but had never heard them live.

I’m happy to say that my first official date with my wife, Katie (13 years ago) was a Pele Juju concert in Berkeley. We met my group of good friends there and they did the official sizing her up to make sure I was on the right track. The openers were a Taiko drum group that really got the crowd on their feet, allowing Pele Juju to come out and rock the house. They did not disappoint!

Pele Juju stopped touring and disbanded about 8-10 years ago and only recently this past Fall put out some new music and did a tour. I’m happy to have rediscovered them as I appreciate their upbeat, eclectic music, and of course, for the sentimentality I have as I am still happily in love with my wife after all these years.

Check out “Anikewa”; some great bass, guitar magic, drums and high-pumping vocals extolling the virtues of peace (and our responsibility for it), something we all need more of.

You can find this song and 3 others (for free download) at www.pelejuju.com/music.htm.

Enjoy.
