This song showcases both the mastermind behind much
of the best in British (or any) folk-rock, writer
Richard Thompson, and to REM, my favorite band during
the eighties, who performs it. I had a really hard
year in ‘06 professionaly and financially. Lost my
job, stabbed in the back by my unit supervisor at
work, my car vandalized, (minor damage) and in January
my wife and I decided to separate after an 11 year
marriage. I still keep the flames of hope and optimism
for a better life burning, and know that if I stay
focused and work enough things will improve on many
fronts. I find myself walking a fine line between not
only failure and success, but life and death Itself,
mentally and emotionally. Things have pushed me to
new levels of awareness from walking on the edge– and
it’s OK, because I’m learning new, indescribable
skills in moving through this place. This song
celebrates all that, and I get high listening to it
every time.
